The easiest way to type mathematical and scientific symbols (and foreign characters*) on your Windows PC
* Czech, Danish, Esperanto, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hungarian, IPA for English, IPA for all languages, Italian, Math/Science, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swedish and Turkish
Run TypeIt
Choose your keyboard – for example, Math / Science
Click the icon in your taskbar to choose a keyboard. TypeIt will remember your last setting the next time you run it.
Why you’ll love TypeIt
-
Obvious keyboard shortcuts. In the math/science keyboard, just press Alt + the key that’s similar (by shape or sound) to the character you want to type. For example, to type μ, press Alt + M.
Alternatively, you can type a letter like m, and then tap Ctrl to turn it into μ.
-
You can keep your existing keyboard layout. TypeIt gives you the symbols you need, but doesn’t force a whole new layout on you. It doesn’t change the way you type numbers and punctuation, so you won’t have to get used to new ways of typing characters like ", ? or /.
- Pleasantly fast typing. Why copy & paste characters from webpages when you can type them directly into your applications and websites?
- You can use it offline. Flaky Internet access? No worries. With the TypeIt app, your foreign characters are always available.
- Pop-up help is always a keystroke away (see example) – just press Alt + F1. You probably won’t need it, though :)
- Includes the proper punctuation: curly quotes (“ ”) and long dashes (– —).
- Doesn’t get in the way. I like software that does the job without making a big fuss. That’s why TypeIt installs in three clicks, consumes very little memory and CPU, and doesn’t bother you with pop-ups and updates.
Voilà! Now you can type mathematical and scientific symbols anywhere – directly in your word processor, email, IM, Facebook, Web forums, etc.
Just hold down the right-hand Alt key and press the appropriate key (usually related to the character you want to type by shape or sound) For example:
μ | hold Alt and press M |
≠ ≈ ≝ ≡ | hold Alt and press = one, two, three or four times |
∈ ∉ | hold Alt and press W once or twice |
∅ ° ø | hold Alt and press 0 one, two or three times |
Note that the Math/Science keyboard is limited to what can be achieved with Unicode characters. For example, it does not allow you to put one symbol over another.
Alternative method:
Tap the right-hand Ctrl key to modify the preceding character. (how does that work?)
